What is an e-passport?
An e-passport, also known as an electronic passport, is a type of passport that has a microprocessor chip embedded in the cover. The chip stores the passport holder’s biometric information, such as digital photographs and fingerprints, as well as the holder’s personal information, which is printed on the data page of the passport. E-Passports are designed to enhance security and prevent identity fraud. They use biometric technology including facial recognition and fingerprint scanning to verify the identity of the passport holder. Some countries have been issuing e-passports since late 2006.
